Woodstock, ON – The 2009 Ontario ParaSport Summer Games kicked off Friday in “The Friendly City” and three sports started off the action. Boccia matches were held at the Woodstock District Community Complex while Goalball was hosted at Oliver Stephens Public School and the throwing portion of the Athletics competition got under way through the breaks in the clouds.
In the Boccia competition, Paralympian Adam Dukovich took his first match of the weekend while 14 year old Brock Richardson was surprised in two close upsets. The action starts up again Saturday running from 8:30am-3:45pm at the Woodstock District Community Complex.
Goalball took center stage at the Games Friday with three great matches taking place on both the men’s and women’s side. On the women’s side the Mistiks, consisting of Lyndsey Buhr, Sarah Hargraves, and captain Whitney Burk, took both of their games 6-4 and 5-3. On the men’s side captain Dylan Johnson and the rest of his Team Thunder dominated the field with a 10-5 and 10-0 win. Finals for both the men’s and women’s divisions will take place at Oliver Stephens Public School starting at 3:00pm. Medal ceremonies will take place at 4:30 in the gymnasium.
Athletics events kicked off Friday in the rain, with the field events running for most of the afternoon. Saturday will see a full schedule with all disciplines taking place at the newly resurfaced College Avenue Secondary School track. The events start at 8:30 and will run throughout the day.
The James Street tennis courts will be the site of the Wheelchair Tennis events. Matches are slated to begin at 9:00am Saturday with the finals starting at 3:00pm.
The ParaEquestrian events are scheduled to start at 8:00am at Cupar Fresians Farms south of Woodstock on Highway 59. Competition will wrap up around 11:00am with the medal ceremony to follow.
This year Lawn Bowling will be demonstrated at the Ontario ParaSport Summer Games at the Woodstock Lawn Bowling Club. Matches will start at 8:00am and close up around 2:00pm.
