Toronto, ON – The moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. After many hours of searching, phones calls, emails and a province-wide survey, ParaSport Ontario is proud to announce the launch of the Ontario ParaSport Resource Directory. This exciting new Directory is available both in hardcopy and online. The new ParaSport Ontario website is now home to a listing of all ParaSport clubs and programs across the province.
One of the barriers to participation in sports for people with a physical disability is a lack of awareness of the opportunities available, locations of programs and clubs as well as how to get involved. Many individuals with a disability look to professionals such as recreation therapists, parks and recreation inclusion specialists, teachers, and social workers to help them engage in their community so they can enhance their recreation and leisure lifestyle. Due to the large catchment area of many of the organizations it is difficult for these professionals to know the communities of each of the people they serve.
The Directory will be a valuable and easy tool to use for professionals, individuals and parents to help them best direct themselves or those they are supporting. The listing can be searched based on community or sport for ease of finding what is available. A description of the various sports as well as the governing provincial sport organizations can also be found in the hardcopy Directory as well as on the website. Recreation Therapists who received hard copies of the Directory to date have been thrilled with it and feel it will be an extremely useful tool for them and their clients.
The creation of the Directory was funded by the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and ParaSport Ontario is grateful for their support in this exciting initiative.
