Kingston, ON — The Opening Ceremonies for the Kingston 2010 Ontario ParaSport Winter Games were held this evening at the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre.
The Master of Ceremonies was CKWS television’s sports anchor Doug Jeffries. The athletes’ procession was headed by a piper and colour guard from Canadian Forces Base Kingston, and the National Anthem was sung by Para-athlete Jenna Lambert. Jane Chartrand, an Algonquin Elder and Nokomis performed a prayer, before Para-swimmers Nik Tolgyesi and Harley Bolton read the Athlete’s Oath in English and French respectively. Para-swimmers Michael Williams and Emily Sayeau then brought the ParaSport Games Torch into the building.
Notable guests who attended to show their support included the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable David C. Onley; Margarett Best, Ontario minister of Health Promotion; and Mr. John Gerretsen, MPP for Kingston and the Islands.
Competition began earlier today, with events scheduled through Sunday, January 24th. Approximately 450 participants from across Ontario are participating, including 300 athletes with a physical disability, support staff, coaches and officials.
The six competitive sports include ParaAlpine Skiing, Sledge Hockey, Wheelchair Curling, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby and Swimming. These events are being held at a variety of local venues, including the Calabogie Peaks Resort, the Invista Centre, the Royal Kingston Curling Club, and the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre.
“Although this event is in Kingston, it is intended for residents across this part of eastern Ontario to enjoy, participate in and learn from,” said John Munro, Chairman of the Kingston Games.
The Ontario ParaSport Winter Games are delivered by the Sport Alliance of Ontario in partnership with ParaSport Ontario, the Sport Tourism Branch of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation, Canadian Forces Base Kingston, and the City of Kingston. The Government of Ontario is the primary funder of the Games.
