Ontario Curling Council

The Ontario Curling Council is the educational and development arm of curling in Ontario. The organization is run using a governance model whereby the Staff manages the day-to-day operations while the Board sets policies and direction. Five member associations are the stakeholders in the organization and their clubs and curlers reap the benefits of the various programs.

Wheelchair curling started in July 2001 when the Canadian Curling Association asked Curl Ontario to head up a pilot project to send a team to the first World Wheelchair Curling Championship.

Team Canada made up of Ontario residents, four of whom had never curled before was recruited and trained and came home with the silver medal.

Curling is a game played on ice requiring hand/eye co-ordination - a game of skill, strategy and luck but above all, it is a game of fun. It can be played by both males and females from the age of 14 to 80. It can be recreational or competitive depending on how much time you can devote to the sport.

The game involves throwing a 44 lb curling stone the length of a sheet of ice (132 ft.). Depending upon your strength, most people in a wheelchair can curl but a personal assessment will confirm that. A custom delivery will then be designed to capitalize on those strengths.
