Ron Foster Award

Over the past many years, ParaSport Ontario (formerly Paralympics Ontario and Sport for the Disabled – Ontario) along with member Multi-Sport Associations including Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association, Ontario Blind Sports Association, Ontario Cerebral Palsy Sports Association and Ontario Amputee and Les Autres Sports Association, have recognized the tremendous achievements and dedication of their athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers.

Numerous deserving awards have been presented including the Bob Secord Award (presented to an athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of the ParaSport Games through athletic achievement, camaraderie and leadership), the Ron Foster Award (presented to volunteers at the provincial level who have dedicated their time (10 years or more) and energy towards the delivery of opportunities for athletes with a physical disability in sport and recreation), Games Hosting Appreciation Awards, Corporate Appreciation Awards, numerous MSO Awards and most recently ParaSport Ontario Awards.

In 2007, ParaSport Ontario created four new awards that would be presented annually, including:

  • ParaSport Ontario Team of the Year
  • ParaSport Ontario Coach of the Year
  • ParaSport Ontario Male Athlete of the Year
  • ParaSport Ontario Female Athlete of the Year

Each member Multi-Sport Organization was invited to nominate their Team, Coach, and Athletes of the Year for these prestigious awards. A selection committee was formed to review the nominations and select who they felt was most deserving of each award. In 2008, all Multi-Sport and Provincial Sport Organizations (10 in total) that partner with ParaSport Ontario in Games delivery were invited to submit nominations for these annual awards.

In addition, hundreds of volunteers have been recognized over the years for the time and expertise they have graciously given to Sport for the Disabled Ontario, Paralympics Ontario, ParaSport Ontario, the Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association, the Ontario Cerebral Palsy Sports Association, the Ontario Blind Sports Association and the Ontario Amputee and Les Autres Sports Association. Various awards are presented annually to 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 year volunteers.

In 2008, Paralympics Ontario officially changed its name to ParaSport Ontario following a change in the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s Trade Mark Use Policy. The new name was launched during the 2008 Ontario ParaSport Awards on Novemer 15th. From this date forward, the PO annual awards would be called the ParaSport Ontario Team, Coach, Male Athlete and Female Athlete of the Year.

From this point forward, the presentation of these awards will be incorporated into the Ontario ParaSport Games starting in Kingston in January of 2010.
