The Government of Ontario (Ministry of Health Promotion), in partnership with the Government of Canada (Sport Canada), provides not-for profit organizations and provincial level not-for-profit organizations with an opportunity to apply for “Sport for More” funding (1-3 year cycles).
The Sport for More Program is funded through a multi-year bilateral agreement between the Ministry of Health Promotion and the Department of Canadian Heritage, through Sport Canada. This is the second multi-year bilateral agreement targeting sport participation and is aimed at building on the success of the initial Sport for More Program.
Funding is provided for initiatives that support the Enhanced Participation goal of ACTIVE2010 and the Canadian Sport Policy. Bilateral funding for sport participation is used for the following two initiatives:
- Aboriginal Sport Initiatives:
Open application process to not-for-profit organizations to increase sport participation among aboriginal peoples
- Sport Initiatives:
Open application process to provincial level not-for-profit organizations to increase sport participation among underrepresented groups as identified in ACTIVE2010
2005-2008
ParaSport Ontario (PO) was fortunate to receive Sport for More funding for its Winter Ability Program. This program enabled the development of winter sports within the PO Ready Willing and Able Program and the ParaSport Games Program. This funding made possible, the 2006 Winter ParaSport Games in Huntsville and the 2008 Winter ParaSport Games in Collingwood with over 400 participants at both Games. In addition, the sports of sledge hockey, para-nordic skiing, para-alpine skiing and wheelchair curling were added to the list of sports offered within the Ready Willing & Able program which offers introductory sports sessions in rehabilitation centres, community centres, schools and camps. Winter parasports have now become a regular part of ParaSport Ontario’s programming thanks to this grant.
2009-2011
In March of 2009, ParaSport Ontario received another Sport for More grant for another 3 year period for its “Take the Lead” program. The overall goal of the “Take the Lead” program is to create awareness in as many communities throughout Ontario as possible, and encourage athletes and volunteers to “Take the Lead” in becoming involved in ParaSport, as an athlete, coach, official, administrator, volunteer, lobbyist, Games organizing committee, etc.. This project includes three major components including the development of 10 Accessible Sport Councils, a series of ParaSport Webinars, and ParaSport Expos. The project is designed to provide first contact awareness which will lead to introductory sport sessions as well as to promote community involvement at all levels. It will focus on encouraging Ontarians to “Take the Lead” in leading a healthy active lifestyles both as athletes and volunteers.
