A Look Back at The Active Ontario FestivalThe morning sun is beautiful as it sits over the lake at Ontario Place during The Active Ontario Festival. You can hear the buzz of volunteers and booths being set up, as well as young families beginning their day to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through being active. The atmosphere is calm and the weather is picture perfect. We had beautiful skies for the majority of our time at the Parasport Ontario Booth, along with a few good laughs as athletes and participants rushed into the building from our sport demonstrations. Children and adults of all ages and abilities came together, be it the mother who tried sledge hockey with her baby tucked into a carrier, or the young child trying parasport for the first time. Some were apprehensive at first but once they tried, they kept coming back. The smiles, the laughter and the support of the general public were amazing! Many were surprised at the effort needed to put in to play theses sports and appeared to walk away with a new respect for parasport and its athletes.
Parasport Ontario brought together Ambassadors from sitting volleyball, sledge hockey, para-athletics and para-sailing to demonstrate and try, as part of their new philosophy “Try Me”. We shared our stories of overcoming life no matter the obstacles, and how to be the best you can be. This demonstration was more than getting people to just try parasport, but also raising awareness about the parasport community and getting people involved. ParaSport Ontario truly believes in their motto, “Sport for everyBODY”.
