Darek Symonowicz

Darek Symonowicz

Darek grew up living an active life, participating in a variety of sports. In 2008, Darek was in a motorcycle accident that severely affected his right knee and demanded multiple surgeries and long periods of rehabilitation. Through his rehabilitation, Darek was introduced to sitting volleyball and fell in love with the sport. Darek joined the Men’s National Sitting Volleyball team in 2012. In 2014, Darek took a medical leave from the team to have his right leg amputated above the knee. Darek wanted to put an end to the constant pain of his injury and the constant surgeries on his deteriorating joint. He says it was one of the best choices he has ever made and that he has freedom in his lifestyle now. Darek has competed in Sportif Defi in Montreal twice and competed in the Intercontinental Cup in China March 2016. He currently goes to the gym 3 days a week, swims, cycles, rock climb, and plays wheelchair basketball. Darek loves being able to give back to kids as an Athlete Ambassador with ParaSport® Ontario, and show people with disabilities what is possible after a life changing moment.
